CD Review

January 2019 Western Way Magazine

“Hills of Early Morn” Review by Rick Huff

The McDailey’s refer to themselves as a “Rural Roots Band!” One of the members (Cinnamon Sue Dailey) has been a longtime friend and musical collaborator with the late Liz Masterson.  She and the band had the distinction of backing our dear lady of notes on her final recording, completed mere months before her passing.  This special limited-edition CD is the result.

Liz’s prescient album notes are worth the price of admission on their own, but mostly classic Western songs covered here have never been rendered with more heart or gusto.    There is definitely an extra zest infusing these proceedings.  Picks: “Little Old Sod Shanty on the Claim,” Mike Fleming’s “Roads to Colorado,” Jack Thorpe’s “Chopo [My Pony],” “Turkey in The Straw” [a vocal version!], the Delmore Brothers’ “Fugitives’s Lament” and “Blazin’ The Trail [To My Home].”

Ten Tracks, highly recommended.
